But with so many different things to offer, it’s a bit challenging to pick the right area for you.

We’ve come up with a list of recommended areas to make things easier.

Each of the recommended areas comes with its own advantages and disadvantages, which are summarized after each paragraph.

With that being said, let’s jump straight to our recommendation.

where to stay in paris for couples

The best areas to stay in Paris for couples are:

1. Eiffel Tower (7th Arrondissement)

For many tourists, but also for many couples, staying around the Eiffel Tower is one of the best options you have. Aside from the fact that you’re located near Paris’ most iconic landmark, it’s one of the oldest parts of Paris and the architecture is simply spectacular.

There are several other landmarks close by, but most importantly, as a couple, you might have a hotel room with a view of the Eiffel Tower.

We cannot think of anything more romantic when visiting Paris as a couple.

As you might expect from a popular area like this, you pay the premium price for a hotel room.

Also, during the evening, the area is pretty quiet, so if you’re a couple and you want to explore a little bit of Paris’ nightlife, there are better options available.

To move around, you have access to four different metro lines, which really comes in handy when you’re in Paris for sightseeing.

Overall, if you have the budget for it, the 7th arrondissement is one of the best areas to stay in Paris for couples.

2. Montmartre (18th Arrondissement)

This area is often dubbed the most romantic area in Paris.

Famous painters like Picasso used to live here.

It’s the area where you can find the Sacré-Cœur and the neighbourhood is built on a hill.

Walking through this part of Paris is a feast as you have to climb stairs and walk over a bricked road.

It’s exactly as you see it in the movies.

One of the best parts of this district is the Rue des Martyrs, a street where you find unique shops including art galleries.

You will discover all sorts of cool places and can relax and enjoy a wine with some small bites and watch the daily lives of the Parians.

Surprisingly, Montmartre is not as expensive.

This is because it’s a high-numbered arrondissement, which means it’s a bit further away from the main attractions, although you have the Sacré-Cœur close by.

The downside of this part is that you do have to take a metro ride to reach the city’s heart, but once you’re there, you can walk from one attraction to the other.

And to see all the important landmarks, you have to take the metro anyway no matter where you’re staying.

Note: although the nearby Gare du Nord, the main train station in Paris, is not part of Montmartre, we do recommend you not stay around there. During the evening, it’s quite a sketchy neighbourhood.

Montmartre itself is perfectly safe, though.

3. Louvre (1st Arrondissement)

As we mentioned earlier, staying around the Eiffel Tower does give you a romantic view of this important landmark, however, during the evening, it gets quite dull.

The alternative is to stay in the first arrondissement, which is named the Louvre.

No, you don’t have that romantic view of the Eiffel Tower, however, you’re close to some of the more exciting nightlife areas (La Marais and Oberkampf) of Paris, which offer all sorts of cool restaurants and bars.

It’s a little bit of a compromise you have to make, as both the first and the seventh arrondissements offer mostly premium hotels.

The Louvre probably is a better district location-wise as there are several important attractions nearby.

Also, almost all metro lines run through this small area, even though for visiting most of the attractions, you can just walk to it.

So, if you have the budget for it and don’t necessarily need a romantic view of the Eiffel Tower and want to take advantage of public transportation to the fullest, the Louvre is your best option.

And, you’re located nearby some of the most bustling areas of Paris.

4. Saint-Germain-dès-Près (6th Arrondissement)

Saint-Germain-dès-Près is the area south of the previously recommended Louvre.

Paris can be divided into twenty different arrondissements but it can also be divided into two sections, namely the left bank and the right bank.

From the river’s perspective, as the river “enters” Paris from the east, the left bank is where you can find Saint-Germain-dès-Près and the Eiffel Tower, and the right bank is where you can find the Louvre and Montmartre.

On the left bank, you have several impressive attractions such as the Pantheon and the Luxembourg Gardens and you are near the Notre Dame and Sainte Chapelle.

When you’re staying at Saint-Germain-dès-Près, you have all these highlights basically at your doorsteps.

There are several metro lines running through this area and when you simply cross the famous bridge that’s called Pont des Arts, you’re at the Louvre and have access to more metro lines.

Moving around is a piece of cake.

However, this area does get – similar to the Eiffel Tower – a bit quite boring in the evening and you have to visit La Marais and Oberkampf to enjoy the more vibrant part of Paris, which are located further away than when you’re staying at the previously recommended area called the Louvre.

But for sightseeing purposes and upscale experiences, Saint-Germain-dès-Près is excellent.

And like all recommended areas in this article, the architecture of these parts of the city is simply stunning.

5. Latin Quarter (5th Arrondissement)

East of Saint-Germain-dès-Près, you can find the Latin Quarter.

Whereas the previously recommended areas in Paris for couples were touristy, the Latin Quarter is a less-touristy alternative without losing the romantic vibe Paris has to offer.

In this part of Paris, you find some universities, although most students stay at Montparnasse.

What you do find here are nice cafes and bakery shops and it’s known for its bookstores, including the Shakespeare & Company.

It’s the oldest part of Paris and when you walk through this part on narrow, cobblestone streets, it’s as if you went back in time.

Food lovers should head over to Rue Mouffetard where you can find an extraordinary outdoor food market.

If you stay in the southeast part of the Latin Quarter, you can enjoy the less touristy part of Paris as it is a bit away from major attractions.

If you stay in the northeast part of this particular area, you’re close to the major tourist attractions such as the Pantheon.

Because it has a vibrant nightlife scene and is located near other great nightlife areas, this is the perfect choice for couples who seek a more vibrant experience during the evening.

Compared to all the other recommended areas, the Latin Quarter is the second most affordable area of them all and with excellent access to public transportation, it’s well worth considering.
